Microsoft Xbox Layoffs: Halo Studios Next Target?

Microsoft layoffs at Xbox and restructuring at Halo Studios in late 2024 reshaped the future of the iconic first-person shooter franchise, according to official company announcements and industry reporting. The changes follow broader workforce reductions across Microsoft’s gaming division, prompting shifts in how future Halo titles are developed.

Xbox Division Layoffs and Studio Restructuring

Microsoft announced sweeping job cuts within its gaming division, impacting teams across Xbox, Bethesda, and supporting studios, according to a memo sent to staff by Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer. The cuts affected approximately 1,900 employees, representing about eight percent of the overall gaming workforce at the time. Following these reductions, leadership at Microsoft initiated structural changes at 343 Industries, subsequently rebranding and reorganizing the team under the Halo Studios banner to change how the franchise builds future games.

Transition to Unreal Engine for Future Halo Projects

Halo Studios abandoned its proprietary Slipspace Engine in favor of Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5, according to studio leadership speaking at the 2024 Halo World Championship. Studio head Pierre Hintze and COO Elizabeth Van Wyck stated that the shift allows development teams to focus on creating content rather than building and maintaining engine technology. Multiple teams at the studio began work on new projects simultaneously under the codename “Project Foundry,” marking a significant shift away from the single-studio bottleneck that characterized previous franchise entries like Halo Infinite.

Industry Impact and Strategic Shift

The pivot to Unreal Engine aligns with a broader strategy across major publishers to adopt commercial engines over expensive proprietary software, according to industry analysts. By cutting internal engine R&D costs and utilizing off-the-shelf tools, Halo Studios aims to shorten development cycles for future installments. While fans await concrete release dates for upcoming projects built on the new engine, the studio’s leadership emphasized that the restructuring is designed to secure the long-term viability of the franchise.
