Asha Sharma Takes the Helm at Microsoft Gaming, Addresses AI Concerns

Asha Sharma has officially stepped into the role of CEO at Microsoft Gaming, replacing Phil Spencer after his 38-year tenure with the company. The appointment, announced on February 20, 2026, marks a significant shift in leadership for the tech giant’s gaming division, as Spencer transitions to an advisory role through the summer. Sharma’s appointment follows the recent departures of business development chief Chris Young and GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke in 2025, and a shift for Microsoft’s most high-ranking security leader, Charlie Bell, to an individual contributor role earlier this month.

A New Era for Xbox

Sharma, who joined Microsoft in 2024 after roles at Meta and Instacart, inherits a gaming division facing challenges, including a nearly 10% decline in Xbox revenue during the December quarter – a steeper drop than anticipated. The company as well announced an unspecified impairment charge in its gaming business in January. Despite the recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $75 billion in 2023, current-generation Xbox consoles have not achieved the same popularity as Sony’s PlayStation or Nintendo’s Switch.

Addressing Concerns: AI and Gaming Experience

One of the immediate questions surrounding Sharma’s appointment has been her background in AI and lack of prior experience directly leading a gaming division. In her first interview since the announcement, Sharma addressed these concerns, emphasizing her commitment to “great games,” “the return of Xbox,” and “the future of play.” She defined “great games” as those with “deep emotional resonance,” “a distinct point of view,” and the ability to evoke feelings in players, citing Firewatch as an example.

Acknowledging she has “a lot to learn” as an outsider to the gaming community, Sharma positioned herself as a “platform builder” focused on earning the trust of both players and developers. She highlighted her experience scaling Facebook Messenger at Meta and guiding Instacart to profitability, demonstrating a track record of success in technology and business leadership.

AI Integration: A Cautious Approach

Sharma also directly addressed concerns about the potential for overreliance on artificial intelligence in game development. She pledged to avoid “short-term efficiency” and “soulless AI slop,” stating she has “no tolerance for bad AI.” While acknowledging AI’s role in gaming “growth engines,” she emphasized that “great stories are created by humans.”

Looking Ahead: GDC and Xbox Games Showcase

Sharma teased upcoming announcements from Xbox, with more news expected at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) next month, followed by a larger Xbox Games Showcase later this spring. Xbox President Sarah Bond is also resigning from the company, while Xbox Studios Head Matt Booty has been promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer, and will work closely with Sharma.
