Engineering Students Undergo Army-Style Training to Prepare for Professional Challenges
Alençon, Orne, France – January 23, 2026 – Fourteen plastics engineering students from ISPA in Alençon recently participated in a unique training day designed to prepare them for teh demands of their future careers.Initiated by a student within the group, the day involved a series of exercises and scenarios led by the French Army in the Ecouves forest.
The initiative aimed to equip the students with valuable skills in management, methodology, and teamwork, drawing parallels between the challenges faced in the military and those they are likely to encounter in the professional world. The training focused on practical application, moving beyond theoretical knowledge to foster resilience and problem-solving abilities.
The day’s activities included an orienteering course, designed to enhance navigational skills and strategic thinking. Students also received instruction in providing medical care in challenging environments, learning essential first aid techniques applicable to a range of situations.
A particularly demanding exercise involved a two-kilometer stretcher carry, simulating the evacuation of an injured individual across challenging terrain. Working in teams, the students rotated carrying a makeshift stretcher, navigating a muddy and obstacle-filled path. This exercise emphasized the importance of physical endurance, coordination, and mutual support.
“These are not real conditions, otherwise they would have a weapon in their hand to secure the surroundings from potential enemies,” explained Lieutenant Colonel Gadek, highlighting the simulated nature of the training. Despite the controlled habitat, the experience proved realistic enough to elicit a humorous response from Adjutant Prioul, who joked about the proximity of nearby hunters, adding a touch of unexpected authenticity to the day.
The program underscores a growing trend of incorporating practical, real-world training into academic curricula, recognizing the value of experiential learning in preparing students for the complexities of the modern workforce. By embracing the discipline and teamwork inherent in military training, these future engineers hope to gain a competitive edge as they embark on their professional journeys.
