Wealthy Individuals Urge Higher taxes, Citing Political and social Harm
A group of wealthy individuals, including musician Brian Eno and Abigail Disney, granddaughter of Walt Disney, are publicly calling for increased taxes on the world’s richest people. They argue that extreme wealth is detrimental to democracy, exacerbates social inequalities, and contributes to the climate crisis.
In an open letter, the signatories express concern over the widening gap between the ultra-rich and the rest of the population, stating it impacts communities, nations, and future generations. They claim a small number of global billionaires have undue influence over democracies, governments, the press, technology, and are worsening poverty and exclusion. They directly appeal to leaders – from those at the World Economic Forum in Davos to local officials – to “tax us.” The goal, they say, is to restore a sense of “collective wealth.”
The initiative, renewed for another four years, has gained increasing support. Last year, at the Davos forum, 260 billionaires and millionaires voiced similar demands. The campaign is spearheaded by the NGO Oxfam, which recently published a report highlighting a dramatic increase in global wealth concentration.
According to Oxfam’s latest findings, the number of billionaires globally has surpassed 3,000, and their combined wealth has increased by 81% since 2020. This unprecedented level of wealth concentration, Oxfam argues, underscores the urgent need for fairer taxation policies.
