Milo J Brings Argentine Folklore to NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert
Buenos Aires native Milo J captivated audiences with his vibrant Tiny Desk Concert debut on Thursday, April 30, 2026, showcasing a unique blend of South American folk traditions and contemporary rap. The 19-year-old artist performed a 16-minute set, largely drawn from his 2025 album, La Vida Era Más Corta, accompanied by the Uruguayan murga group, Agarrate Catalina.
A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity
Milo J’s performance seamlessly integrated the sounds of traditional Argentine instruments like the charango, tiple, and woodwinds with modern musical elements. He opened the set with “Recordé” and an unreleased track, “Cuestiones,” acoustic ballads enhanced by dynamic percussion. The concert highlighted his ability to deliver folkloric sounds – including chacarera, chamamé, and zamba – with a poetic and contemporary approach.
Agarrate Catalina: A Colorful Addition
The inclusion of Agarrate Catalina, a murga group known for its colorful appearances during Carnival season in Uruguay, added a distinctive layer to the performance. Milo J introduced the group, emphasizing their origins from “another beautiful country,” and highlighted their contribution to the concert’s vibrant atmosphere. Murga is a historic performance tradition celebrated for its brightly painted faces, elaborate costumes, and carnival-inspired antics.

A Latest Softness and Depth

Stripped back and fortified, the concert showcased the cumulative spirit of centuries and the exploratory meditations on existence that define his music.
