Switzerland Eyes Brazilian Reinforcement for Left-Back Position as Ricardo Rodriguez Nears End of International Career

As Ricardo Rodriguez approaches the twilight of his international career with the Swiss national team, attention is turning to potential successors at the left-back position. Even as Miro Muheim has emerged as a leading contender, national coach Murat Yakin has revealed interest in a Swiss-Brazilian player who recently obtained Swiss citizenship, potentially adding another dimension to the competition for the role.

Ricardo Rodriguez’s Impending Departure

For a decade, Ricardo Rodriguez has been a mainstay in the Swiss national team, consistently delivering reliable performances at left-back. However, with Rodriguez set to turn 34 this summer, the need to identify and nurture a long-term replacement has grow increasingly apparent.

Miro Muheim as Frontrunner

Since November 2024, Miro Muheim, currently playing for Hamburg in the Bundesliga, has been considered the primary candidate to succeed Rodriguez. Muheim has been steadily gaining strength and is reaching the prime of his career, having already contributed his first assist for the national team in November against Sweden.

A Latest Contender Emerges

However, coach Murat Yakin has indicated the emergence of another potential candidate: a Brazilian-born player who recently acquired Swiss citizenship. “He is also in our sights,” Yakin stated, adding that the player currently plays in a “high-level championship.” Yakin emphasized the importance of demonstrating interest in the player and plans to observe him further to assess his suitability for the national team this summer.

Cautious Optimism Following Past Experiences

Yakin acknowledged the need for careful evaluation, referencing the case of Lucas Blondel, who previously generated excitement but ultimately did not establish himself in the national team. The coach expressed hope that the situation with the Swiss-Brazilian player will yield a more positive outcome.

Real Betis Squad Update

Ricardo Rodriguez currently plays for Real Betis Balompié, where he is contracted until June 30, 2026. The club’s squad also includes Junior Firpo as another left-back option, contracted until June 30, 2028 Transfermarkt.

Real Betis recently achieved a comeback victory against Panathinaikos, advancing to the next round of the UEL Real Betis Official Website.
