Mission Bay Cycling Safety Improvements – Auckland, Recent Zealand

Auckland Transport is implementing significant changes along Tāmaki Drive in Mission Bay, New Zealand, to enhance safety for cyclists, pedestrians, bus passengers, and drivers. The project, slated to begin in February 2026 and conclude in October 2026, responds to concerns raised by the community and the Ōrākei Local Board. Auckland Transport is committed to creating a safer and more accessible environment for all road users.

Project Details: Western Side of Mission Bay Town Centre

Improvements planned for the city-bound, western side of Mission Bay, near the beach, include:

• Installation of a new refuge island to provide cyclists with a safer crossing point over Tāmaki Drive.
• Extension of the existing two-way cycle lane on the beach side of Tāmaki Drive.
• Removal of the current lowered kerb and replacement with a standard kerb.
• Updates to road markings, including the median and edge lines, to improve visibility and clarity.
• Reprioritization of four on-street parking spaces to accommodate the safety improvements.

Project Details: Eastern Side of Mission Bay Town Centre

On the eastern side of Mission Bay, near Selwyn Avenue, the following changes are planned:

• Creation of a new bus boarding area, designed to provide a safe space for passengers without obstructing the footpath or cycle path.
• Remarking and repainting of the footpath and cycle lane to clearly delineate spaces for pedestrians, cyclists, and bus users.
• Construction of a dedicated crossing and waiting area adjacent to the bus stop, further enhancing passenger safety.
• Widening of the eastbound lane to 4.5 meters by shifting the centre line, providing cyclists with more room to merge safely with traffic.

Notably, parking arrangements will not be altered on the eastern side of Mission Bay town centre.
