One mom’s video is only a few seconds long, but it captures a moment that still stops viewers in their tracks: a toddler mid-bite, mid-celebration, and unknowingly in the earliest stages of an allergic reaction.Simmy larkin, a 33-year-old stay-at-home mom from Langhorne, Pa., never intended to document anything more than her daughter’s excitement about an upcoming birthday. “If you saw the apple in the video, you saw that a significant portion had been bitten off, and that was her very first time biting into an apple,” Larkin shared exclusively with PEOPLE.

Just days earlier, her daughter had watched cousins bite directly into apples, something Larkin had never let her do before. With her second birthday eight days away, the family was counting down as they often did, asking Alexa how many days were left and capturing the joy that followed.Larkin remembers pulling out her phone as her daughter’s excitement felt like something to remember. “I just wanted to capture her saying how many days until her birthday,” she explained. “I didn’t even notice anything was happening until I watched it back.”

And what Larkin saw in the footage was alarming. Her daughter’s face began to swell almost immediately after the bite.”It started with her lips, and than her tongue started to swell,” Larkin said.”It was so fast.”

A quick trip to the emergency room confirmed their fears: her daughter was having an allergic reaction to apples. But the diagnosis came with a surprising twist. They soon learned that she could eat peeled apples without issue, but the peel itself was the culprit.

“It was a really strange allergy,” Larkin admitted. “We had never dealt with anything like that before.” The family now carries an epinephrine auto-injector, just in case, and is diligent about checking ingredients.

The viral video, which has been viewed over 1.8 million times, has prompted a deeper conversation about how easily allergies can be missed and how families adapt over time. Larkin hopes her experience will encourage other parents to be vigilant and trust their instincts.

“It’s a good reminder that allergies can present in unexpected ways,” she said. “and it’s okay to ask questions and advocate for yoru child’s health.”

Unexpected Allergies: A Mother’s Story of Late-Onset Food Sensitivities

For one mother, a seemingly harmless snack revealed a surprising health challenge. Larkin discovered her daughter had developed an allergy to apple peels, a condition she’d never encountered before.”I’ve never even heard of an apple peel allergy, like that’s why I didn’t catch on the first time,” she explains.

The initial shock was compounded by another unexpected finding: an allergy to beef. “I’ve never heard of anyone ever being allergic to steak, so that situation was like, wow, she’s got a rare allergy,” Larkin says.

Since sharing her experience on TikTok, Larkin has been inundated with messages from others facing similar situations. Many viewers reported developing allergies later in life, even to foods they’d enjoyed for years. “A lot of people commented and said they grew up eating apple peels, and then as an adult they started to react,” Larkin recalls, emphasizing the need for increased vigilance.

Today, this vigilance permeates their daily life. Meals are modified, ingredients are substituted, and even familiar foods are approached with caution. “We substitute ground turkey for a lot of beef recipes, even though I don’t like the taste of it,” Larkin admits with a laugh. She notes a positive side effect: the family now consumes less red meat overall.

Navigating social events requires careful planning. Larkin often provides her daughter’s food for events like birthday parties and cookouts to avoid potential cross-contamination.

School presents unique emotional challenges. “I feel bad knowing that she can’t have cupcakes,” larkin says, explaining that her daughter’s teacher keeps candy bars available so she doesn’t feel left out.
