Godzilla’s Legacy Continues: Season 2 of ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ Delves into Time Travel and Character Growth
Apple TV+’s sci-fi series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, rooted in the world of Godzilla, has returned for a second season, introducing a compelling time-travel element to its narrative. The series, which premiered on February 27, 2026, continues to explore the origins of Monarch and the emergence of Titans, with returning stars Anna Sawai and Mari Yamamoto at the forefront.
Keiko Miura’s Journey Through Time
Season 2 centers around the character of Keiko Miura, portrayed by Mari Yamamoto, a brilliant scientist who fell into the Hollow Earth at the end of the first season. Now displaced in time, Miura faces new and dangerous challenges. Yamamoto described her character’s immediate reaction to the situation as one of swift action, stating, “She’s immediately thrust into action after a little bit of disorienting moments.”
Yamamoto emphasized that the narrative avoids dwelling on the disorientation, instead focusing on Miura’s inherent drive to find a path forward and be useful. “I think the great thing was that there’s actually no time to dwell on it,” she explained. “She has to find a path forward and that’s who she is. So, it kind of felt remarkably in line with how she would have acted anyway, that she’s gonna try to find a way to be useful.”
A Season of Growth and Purpose
The second season promises significant character development for Miura. Yamamoto revealed that her character will be striving to find her purpose amidst the chaos of time travel. “She’s gonna try to find her purpose,” Yamamoto said. “And she’s also a fiercely loving person, so even if she’s not wanted — I’m not saying she’s not — she’s gonna try to love as much as she can, and all of those things. So I think that’s how I approached it, just going back and forth in the timelines, but remembering who she is still.”
Collaborative Spirit on Set
Yamamoto highlighted the collaborative atmosphere on set, particularly with her fellow Japanese cast members. Filming for Season 2 took place in Australia, where she, Anna Sawai, Takehiro Hira, and newcomer Ren Watabe frequently spent time together, often sharing Japanese meals. The crew reportedly praised the positive attitude of the Japanese contingent.
Exploring the Past: The Allure of the 1950s
A portion of the season’s storyline is set in the 1950s, a setting that particularly appealed to Yamamoto. “There’s something about the ’50s. Maybe it’s the costumes, I don’t know,” she said. “It’s such an optimistic kind of time, and to be in an era where you’re discovering the monsters, when you’re like, the first ones to see them, that’s really fun.”
Timeline and Release Schedule
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 premiered on Apple TV on February 27, 2026, with new episodes released weekly through May 1, 2026. The series unfolds across two distinct timelines: the present day (2017) and the 1950s, offering a complex and engaging narrative within the broader Monsterverse timeline. The display is set years before other entries in the franchise, making it one of the earliest stories in the Monsterverse chronology.
