Three regional transit agencies in western Massachusetts are collaborating to introduce three new longer-distance, limited-stop bus routes that will knit together their service territories across the Berkshire Mountains, with service expected to launch in early 2026.
The new “Link413” service – named for the western massachusetts area code – is a collaboration of the Berkshire Regional Transit Authority (RTA), based in Pittsfield, the Franklin RTA, based in Greenfield, and the Pioneer Valley RTA, which has hubs in Springfield, amherst, and Northampton.
Rauley Caine,General Manager of the PVTA,told StreetsblogMASS that a firm launch date hasn’t yet been steadfast,and the agencies are still finalizing schedules,but they hope to launch the new service this winter.
It will offer three routes:
* The 901 will run between Pittsfield, Adams, and north Adams, parallel to the Berkshire RTA’s existing 1 bus,but with a shorter 45 min. one-way trip time.
* The 903 will connect the Berkshire RTA and Franklin RTA service areas between North Adams and Greenfield, with stops in Adams, Savoy, Plainfield, Ashfield, and Charlemont, and an estimated 90-minute one-way trip time.
* The 905 will run between Greenfield and Springfield, connecting the Franklin RTA and Pioneer Valley RTA service areas, with stops in Northampton and Amherst, and an estimated 100-minute one-way trip time.
New Intercity Bus Service, Link413, to Connect Western Massachusetts
A new intercity bus service, Link413, is set to launch in Western Massachusetts, connecting communities and offering a new transportation option for residents and visitors. The service is a collaboration between the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA),the Franklin Regional Transit Authority (FRTA),and the Berkshire Regional Transit Authority (BRTA).
The Link413 buses, branded with distinctive wraps, will serve longer-distance routes than typical RTA buses, aiming to improve regional connectivity. These buses will be ADA accessible and equipped with amenities including comfortable high-back seats, power outlets, and onboard Wi-Fi.
The launch of the service is supported by $4.5 million in funding from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s (MassDOT) Regional Connectivity and Innovations awards program, which was part of the $184 million in RTA operating subsidies allocated in the 2024 state budget.
Unlike many local RTA routes, Link413 will require a fare. A one-way ticket will cost $10, with a reduced fare of $5 for eligible customers. Tickets can be purchased through the massdot BusPlus+ mobile app, available for Apple and Android devices, or with cash directly on the bus.
