As of January 1, 2026, funding for the age-appropriate conversion of apartments in Vienna was increased.

The City of Vienna supports older people and people with disabilities in making their homes barrier-free – for more safety and independence in everyday life.

Structural measures that reduce or eliminate obstacles in the living space are supported. These include floor-level showers, removing door thresholds, wider doors or installing stair lifts.

The maximum funding amount is now up to 7,500 euros and covers 50 percent of the eligible conversion costs – depending on income. The grant covers 50 percent of the eligible renovation costs.

What is necessary is, among other things, a cost estimate, photos of the current living conditions and proof of the necessity of the conversion, for example a medical certificate. The funding can be applied for online. More information and the online form are available at wien.gv.at.

By the way: In Vienna there is also the “Action 65 Plus“, which promotes easier housing changes for seniors in community housing.
