Moritz Grossmann Releases Hamatic Enamel Watch Editions

Moritz Grossmann is celebrating the 200th anniversary of founder Carl Moritz Grossmann with a second celebratory edition of its Hamatic watch, featuring jet black enamel dials and priced at EUR 63,500 excluding tax, Monochrome Watches reported. The brand has released seven anniversary models this year to honor the 1826 birth of its founder in Dresden, who established a mechanical workshop in Glashütte at the urging of Ferdinand Adolph Lange.

Celebrating Carl Moritz Grossmann and Glashütte Watchmaking Heritage

Born in Dresden in 1826, Carl Moritz Grossmann became a pivotal figure in Glashütte’s emergence as a center of German watchmaking. He gained renown for producing highly efficient watchmaking tools, pocket watches, marine chronometers, and precision pendulum clocks. He also served as a co-founder of the German School of Watchmaking.

The new Hamatic anniversary editions are offered in 41mm rose gold or white gold cases with a height of 11.35mm and feature the brand’s conical crown. Only eight examples of each version will be produced. Both models are paired with hand-stitched alligator leather straps secured by gold prong buckles.

Inside the Calibre 106.0 Hammer-Winding Movement

Originally released in 2018, the Hamatic utilizes a pendulum-style hammer winding rotor directly inspired by late 18th-century bumper and hammer winding systems created by Breguet and other watchmakers. According to Grossmann Uhren, the in-house calibre 106.0 movement features a hammer with a solid gold mass on its extremity swinging in a short arc to wind the mainspring and deliver a 72-hour power reserve.

The movement operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and includes an in-house Grossmann balance equipped with four inertia screws and two poising screws. The openworked reverse reveals the Saxon German silver 2/3 plate, broad Glashütte ribbing, raised gold chatons, violet-annealed screws, and a hand-engraved cantilevered balance cock bearing the year “1826.”

Crafting the Jet Black Enamel Dials

The jet black enamel dials are crafted by mixing ground glass with metal oxides and firing the mixture in a kiln at extreme temperatures over multiple repetitions to achieve depth, lustre, and durability. Unlike earlier Hamatic models that used Roman numerals, the anniversary editions showcase applied white gold or rose gold Arabic numerals.

A peripheral railway-style minutes track frames the dial, accompanied by a slightly recessed small seconds counter at the 6 o’clock position. Grossmann signature uses an emulation of the 1875 typeface to honor the founder.
