Margaret and Sara Ann Whaley: A Troy University Musical Duo

For many years, Margaret Whaley and her daughter, Sara Ann Whaley, have captivated audiences with their piano performances. Often mistaken for sisters due to their striking resemblance, the pair have become a beloved fixture in the Troy, Alabama, community, and beyond.

A Musical Partnership

Margaret and Sara Ann Whaley perform weekly on Troy State University’s television station, entertaining viewers with their musical talents. The WTSU-FM staff warmly welcomes the duo each Thursday afternoon, often receiving smiles, compliments, and even candy bars from Sara Ann, who always expresses her enjoyment of local shows.

Their performances consist of 30-minute sets featuring songs played as a piano duo – a musical piece performed simultaneously by two people on different pianos. The duo’s talent has extended beyond local broadcasts, as they also appeared on the NBC production, The Ty Cobb Talent Show, in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.

A Home Filled with Music

The Whaley home on North Three Notch Street is a testament to their dedication to music. Visitors are immediately surrounded by musical instruments, with a total of four pianos and three organs displayed throughout the house, even in the kitchen. The home is also adorned with antiques and artwork, including paintings created by Sara Ann and framed violins.

Musical Education and Legacy

Both Margaret and Sara Ann studied piano under Mary Murphree Selman of Troy, with Margaret beginning lessons at the age of six and continuing until she attended Judson College. Margaret earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Troy State University and taught piano in the local school system. She recently retired as the organist of the First Presbyterian Church.
