A southern Iowa school district is closing it’s doors Tuesday, Dec. 9 and Wednesday, Dec. 10 because of a surge in sickness. Moulton-Udell School District,in Appanoose County, says around 30% of students and staff are currently out sick-many with the flu.

“We’ll use this time to thoroughly clean our buildings and give our students, staff, and families a much-needed health break,” the school shared on Facebook. That means all athletic events and other activities are canceled too.

Just last month, after Iowa’s first flu-related death this season, KCCI talked to doctors about staying healthy during the winter. State Medical Director Dr. Robert Kruse stressed the importance of getting a flu shot and keeping sick individuals-and sick kids-at home.

The Iowa Department of Health and human Services also recommends these steps:

  • Stay home and skip social events if you or your children aren’t feeling well.
  • Regularly disinfect frequently touched surfaces in your home.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water or hand sanitizer for at least 20 seconds.
  • cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, using a tissue if possible.
