Munster rugby delivered a commanding performance against Benetton Rugby in Treviso, securing a 45-15 victory that significantly enhances their prospects of finishing in the top eight of the United Rugby Championship (URC). The Irish province scored seven tries in a dominant display that showcased both attacking flair and defensive resilience, marking a pivotal moment in their season.

The win moves Munster to 48 points from 18 matches, placing them firmly in contention for a playoff berth as the URC regular season enters its final stretch. With just two rounds remaining, every point gained now carries heightened importance in the tightly packed standings.

Dominant First Half Sets Tone

Munster asserted control early, opening the scoring within the first ten minutes through a powerful drive from replacement hooker Diarmuid Barron, who capped off a sustained period of pressure near the Benetton try line. Fly-half Jack Crowley added the conversion, giving Munster an early 7-0 lead.

The visitors continued to exploit gaps in Benetton’s defense, with winger Alex Kendellen crossing for his second try of the season after a sharp inside pass from scrum-half Craig Casey. Crowley’s successful kick extended the lead to 14-0.

Benetton managed to respond through a penalty kick from fullback Leonardo Marin, but Munster’s intensity remained unrelenting. Just before halftime, replacement center Shane Daly broke through a tackle and sprinted 30 meters to score in the corner, though Crowley’s conversion attempt was wide. At the break, Munster led 19-3.

Second Half Surge Seals Victory

The second half began with Munster continuing their ascendancy. Prop Jean Kleyn powered over from close range after a driving maul, and Crowley converted to make it 26-3. Benetton showed brief resistance, with Marin landing another penalty to make it 26-6, but Munster answered immediately.

Winger Alex Kendellen completed his brace with a try finished off a slick backline move involving Casey and Crowley, who again converted to push the lead to 33-6. Replacement flanker John Hodnett then capped off the scoring with a try in the final minutes, converted by Crowley, to make the final score 45-15.

Benetton managed two late tries through substitutes Ignacio Ruiz and Giacomo Nicotra, both converted by Marin, but the damage had long been done.

Individual Performances Stand Out

Jack Crowley was instrumental with the boot, landing all six of his conversion attempts and consistently putting pressure on the Benetton defense with his tactical kicking. Craig Casey orchestrated the attack with precision, recording 112 meters gained and three line breaks, although Kendellen’s two tries highlighted his growing impact on the wing.

Defensively, Munster limited Benetton to just 15 points despite enjoying 68% possession and 58% territory, according to official URC match statistics. The Irish side made 112 tackles and won 87% of their rucks, underscoring their control across all facets of the game.

Implications for Playoff Race

The victory lifts Munster to fifth in the URC standings with 48 points, just two points behind fourth-placed Ulster and within striking distance of the top four, which grants automatic qualification for the Champions Cup next season. More importantly, the win strengthens their position in the battle for a top-eight finish, which determines qualification for the URC playoffs.

With upcoming matches against Glasgow Warriors and Cardiff Rugby, Munster controls their own destiny. A win in either fixture would all but secure a playoff spot, while even a single bonus-point victory could prove sufficient depending on results elsewhere.

Head coach Graham Rowntree praised his team’s execution: “We came here with a clear game plan and executed it well. The boys showed great discipline and composure, especially in difficult conditions. This is the kind of performance we need to carry into the final games of the season.”

Benetton, meanwhile, remain in 12th place with 28 points, mathematically eliminated from playoff contention but still playing for pride and preparation for next season.

Looking Ahead

As the URC regular season nears its conclusion, Munster’s focus shifts to maintaining momentum and refining their approach ahead of the playoffs. Their ability to score tries from multiple phases — set piece, broken play, and counter-attack — makes them a dangerous opponent in the knockout stages.

For now, the victory in Treviso serves as both a statement of intent and a crucial step toward postseason rugby. With seven tries scored and minimal points conceded, Munster have sent a clear message: they belong among the elite in the United Rugby Championship.
