Muscle Loss Significantly Increases Kidney Failure Risk, Study Finds
Chronic kidney disease patients with reduced muscle mass face a 4.5 times higher risk of kidney function deterioration compared to those with normal muscle mass, according to new research released on March 12, 2026, in observance of World Kidney Day. Specifically, 42.5% of patients in the low muscle mass group experienced kidney function deterioration, compared to 14.3% in the high muscle mass group – a roughly three-fold difference.
Muscle Loss Index: A Clinically Useful Tool
Researchers evaluated muscle mass using a “muscle loss index” calculated from blood test markers creatinine and cystatin C. This index, they noted, offers a clinically valuable way to simultaneously assess a patient’s muscle condition and kidney disease risk. The study confirmed that muscle loss isn’t simply an aging phenomenon but a key health indicator linked to chronic kidney disease progression.
Protein-Energy Wasting and Mortality Risk
A separate analysis of 2,238 non-dialysis chronic kidney disease patients examined the relationship between protein-energy wasting and mortality risk. Patients with two or more indicators of protein-energy wasting experienced a 2.78-fold increase in mortality risk, while those with three or more indicators faced up to a 3.78-fold higher risk. The study also indicated that even exhibiting just two protein-energy wasting risks can elevate the risk of death and cardiovascular disease, a finding that refines previous evaluations based on three or more criteria.
