Zurich Boys’ Choir to Perform Haydn’s theresienmesse in Atmospheric Einsiedeln Monastery Church

The esteemed Zurich Boys’ Choir, in collaboration with the Camerata Zurich, will present Joseph Haydn‘s Theresienmesse (Mass in B major, hob. XXII:12) at the historic Einsiedeln monastery church. This performance promises a deeply moving and reflective experiance, particularly resonant in the lead-up to the Christmas season.

Founded in 1960 by Alphons von Aarburg, the Zurich Boys’ Choir has established itself as a leading choral ensemble in Switzerland. Over its six-decade history, the choir has collaborated with a distinguished roster of conductors, including Herbert von Karajan, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, John eliot Gardiner, Franz Welser-Möst, Charles Dutoit, and David zinman, showcasing its versatility and exceptional musical standards. The choir’s enduring success stems from the vibrant energy and genuine passion for music demonstrated by its young members.

The Theresienmesse, composed by Joseph Haydn between 1798 and 1799, is considered one of his most tender and lyrical late masses. Its intimate character is partly a result of the modest orchestral forces it requires, a constraint dictated by the capabilities of the orchestra at the esterházy court in Eisenstadt, were it premiered in September 1799.

Under the direction of Konrad von Aarburg, the Zurich Boys’ Choir and Camerata Zurich, led by artistic director Esther Hoppe, will bring Haydn’s masterpiece to life within the unique acoustics and spiritual ambiance of the Einsiedeln monastery church. The performance is anticipated to offer audiences a moment of profound contemplation and beauty.
