Ryanair CEO and Elon Musk Trade Barbs Over Starlink for Aircraft
Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary and Elon musk have engaged in a public dispute over the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of installing Starlink internet service on Ryanair’s fleet of Boeing 737s. The exchange, unfolding on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), highlights a substantive disagreement about fuel consumption, costs, and the future of in-flight connectivity.
The conflict began after O’Leary publicly dismissed the idea of equipping Ryanair’s 600+ aircraft with Starlink. Musk responded with critical comments about O’Leary, at one point calling him an “imbecile” and demanding his removal. Ryanair’s official X account further escalated the situation by mocking Musk during a reported outage of his platform, asking if he needed Wi-Fi.
at the heart of the disagreement lies Ryanair’s contention that Starlink’s external antennas would increase drag and fuel consumption. O’Leary estimates a 2% fuel penalty, perhaps costing the airline hundreds of millions of dollars annually – a cost he deems unacceptable for short-haul flights where passengers are unlikely to pay a premium for internet access.
Musk disputes these figures, citing airlines already utilizing Starlink and arguing that high-speed internet is becoming a key factor in passenger choice. He claims O’Leary’s assessment of the fuel burn impact is inaccurate “by a factor of 10.”
As of January 17,2026,several airlines have begun implementing Starlink, including JSX,Hawaiian Airlines, and United Airlines. These airlines report positive passenger feedback regarding the service. However, the impact on fuel efficiency remains a key consideration for airlines like Ryanair, which operate on a high-volume, low-cost model.
