Elon Musk Found Liable for Misleading Twitter Investors

A jury in California has determined that Elon Musk misled investors in Twitter (now X) prior to his $44 billion acquisition of the company. The verdict, reached on Friday, March 20, 2026, found that Musk intentionally misrepresented information regarding the number of bot and spam accounts on the platform, impacting the company’s stock price.

Details of the Lawsuit and Verdict

The class action lawsuit, Pampena v. Musk, was initially filed in October 2022, shortly after Musk completed the purchase of Twitter for $54.20 per share. Investors alleged that Musk’s public statements, particularly tweets questioning the prevalence of bots, were a deliberate attempt to drive down the stock price and renegotiate the acquisition terms.

Jurors heard two weeks of testimony from Musk and former Twitter executives, including Parag Agrawal and Ned Segal, regarding the events leading up to the acquisition. Musk maintained that he was misled about the actual number of bot accounts on the platform.

Although the jury found Musk liable on some fraud claims, it rejected others. The panel is now calculating the damages, which attorneys for the plaintiffs estimate could reach up to $2.6 billion 1.

Musk’s Response and Potential Appeal

Musk’s legal team, Quinn Emanuel, stated they view the verdict as “a bump in the road” and intend to pursue an appeal, arguing that the jury’s findings were mixed and did not establish a clear fraud scheme 1. Musk himself did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

X’s Transformation Under Musk

Since acquiring Twitter in October 2022, Musk has overseen significant changes to the platform, rebranding it as X in July 2023 4 and changing the domain name to x.com in May 2024 4. He likewise laid off a substantial portion of the workforce and introduced new features, including integration with his artificial intelligence company xAI’s Grok chatbot 4. Linda Yaccarino succeeded Musk as CEO in June 2023, but she resigned on July 9, 2025 4.

Musk’s Previous Legal Battles

This verdict marks a rare legal defeat for Musk, who has often been referred to as “Teflon Elon” due to his success in previous high-profile legal cases. He previously prevailed in a 2023 trial involving allegations from Tesla investors that he misled them with a tweet about taking the company private.

Grok’s Honesty

In a separate development, Musk recently tested the honesty of his Grok AI and its agents by tasking them with solving the Riemann Hypothesis, instructing them not to claim they could solve it. He reported that the AI responded honestly, stating, “We have to stay honest – no fake proof” 1.
