Viral Contamination in Mussels Poses Public Health Risk in İzmir, Turkey

A recent study conducted in collaboration between Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine and Adnan Menderes University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, with support from TÜBİTAK, has revealed a significant presence of viruses in mussels harvested from İzmir Bay, raising concerns about public health. The research, which spanned a year, detected Hepatitis A virus (HAV) and Norovirus (NoV) in a substantial percentage of samples.

Study Findings

Molecular (PCR) analyses of mussel samples collected throughout the four seasons indicated considerable viral contamination. Specifically, HAV was found in 26.7 percent of the mussels, even as Norovirus (NoV) was detected in 30 percent. The virus concentration was notably higher in the edible flesh of the mussels, posing a direct risk to consumers.

Sampling Locations

The contaminated mussels were primarily collected from several key locations within İzmir Bay, including Bayraklı, Bostanlı, İnciraltı, Degaj, Mersin Gulf, and Mordoğan.

Expert Commentary

Food Engineer and academician Bülent Şık emphasized that these findings strongly suggest human-caused pollution as the source of the contamination. He stated that the presence of HAV and Norovirus indicates a mixing of sewage waste into the seawater, creating a serious public health hazard.
