NAACP Image Awards Recognize Rising Stars in Gaming and Tech

The NAACP Image Awards have expanded their recognition to include the burgeoning world of gaming and technology, a move lauded as a significant step toward acknowledging the contributions of Black creators and communities within the industry. This year marks the inaugural “Outstanding Digital Content Creator – Gaming/Tech” category, presented as part of the 57th NAACP Image Awards.

A New Category, A Long-Overdue Recognition

The decision to introduce a gaming and tech category stems from a desire to engage with a demographic that has historically been underrepresented in mainstream awards shows. Derek Johnson, president of the NAACP Image Awards, explained the rationale behind the expansion, stating the organization needed to “meet [the community] where they are” and recognize the “power of gaming and tech, AI, where everything is going.”1

Gerard Williams: A Pioneer in the Space

Among the nominees for the inaugural award is Gerard Williams, known to fans as HipHopGamer. Williams, a gaming journalist and community outreach advocate, shared his emotional reaction to the nomination, recalling his early experiences with gaming introduced by his grandmother.2 He emphasized the historical challenges faced by Black creators in the gaming journalism space, recounting instances of racism encountered early in his career.

From Brooklyn Roots to Industry Influence

Williams’ journey began in Brooklyn, where his grandmother sparked his passion for gaming. He has since built a platform through his gaming journalism, a weekly syndicated show with Hot97, and community initiatives like Playmakers, a financial literacy program for New York City schools in partnership with Chase Bank. He also collaborates on a gaming-focused rehabilitation program at Rikers Island, backed by Denzel Washington.2 Recently, Williams was even featured as a character in the video game “Mutant Football League 2,” incorporating his likeness, music, and a team comprised of students and formerly incarcerated individuals he has worked with.

Looking Ahead

Beyond the nomination, Williams has a full slate of upcoming projects, including hosting the Games Beat Summit at the GDC Festival of Gaming in March in San Francisco. He also expressed aspirations to contribute to Men’s Health and potentially become a gaming anchor on “Good Morning America.”2
