Nagoya Mayor Apologizes for Asian Games Inconveniences and Mismanagement

Nagoya Mayor Ichiro Hirosawa formally apologised to athletes on Wednesday for “inconveniences” and mismanagement at the Asian Games across Nagoya and Aichi prefecture. The continent’s biggest sporting event encountered problems, including issues with transport and accommodation shortages that left visiting delegations facing logistical hurdles.

Accommodation Shortages and Temporary Housing Complaints

Organisers scrapped the traditional athletes’ village model in a bid to save money, housing more than 17,000 athletes and officials across temporary wooden units, a cruise ship, and hotels. The scale of the delegation was more than the Olympics, stretching local resources thin. Some participating delegations complained regarding the temporary cabins, saying the beds were too short.

Mayor Hirosawa, who also serves as the acting chairman of the local organising committee, addressed the failures directly. “We must offer our apologies to the athletes and others affected by these inconveniences,” Hirosawa stated, noting that authorities “must sincerely reflect on the mishandling that occurred.” He pointed to human errors and a lack of communication between organisers and national teams.

Transport Breakdowns and Airport Delays

Logistical failures hampered arrivals and daily transit schedules from the opening days of the competition. Following the arrival of international delegations on September 19, some athletes suffered hours-long delays stranded at the airport in Nagoya. Daily transit operations also suffered disruptions, with buses for athletes failing to run when they should, not turning up at all, or going to the wrong venues.

The operational errors extended beyond transport and lodging. Early in the Games, local organisers apologised to South Korea after the North Korean national anthem was played by mistake.

With the competition concluding on Sunday, local organising officials stated they are responding based on what has happened to manage the final days of the event.
