Italian filmmaker Nanni Moretti debuted his latest feature, Succederà questa notte, in competition at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. The romantic comedy-drama adapts multiple short stories by Israeli author Eshkol Nevo, marking Moretti’s second cinematic collaboration with the writer following their 2020 film Three Floors (Tre piani).
Clocking in at 1 hour and 43 minutes, Succederà questa notte follows Matteo, a young man portrayed by French actor Louis Garrel. In the film’s opening sequence, Matteo is left with an infant after his young Norwegian wife departs. Seven years later, he encounters Greta—played by Jasmine Trinca—on a tennis court during her brief pause before her own wedding. Matteo falls for her, and the narrative intersects again seven years later in San Sebastian, where Matteo travels with his ailing father, played by Hippolyte Girardot, to attend a Bruce Springsteen concert.
Louis Garrel and Jasmine Trinca Lead Moretti’s Romantic Feature
Louis Garrel steps into the role of Moretti’s cinematic alter ego, bringing a nonchalant levity to the production. Opposite Garrel, Jasmine Trinca delivers a performance as Greta. This project marks Trinca’s fourth collaboration with Moretti, who originally cast her in her debut screen role in The Son’s Room (La Chambre du fils).

The feature employs lighthearted narrative devices to examine two decades in the lives of characters bound by fate despite conventional marriage and family choices. Critics note standout stylistic moments, including a tennis match filtered through the eyes of the narrator. Cinematography was handled by Francesco Di Giacomo, with a score composed by Alberto Iglesias and editing by Clelio Benevento.
Production Background and Moretti’s Resilience
Director Nanni Moretti returned to production following a heart attack in 2025 at age 73. Despite the health challenge, the director pursued the adaptation of Nevo’s short story collection, published in French as Les Cœurs affamés. The screenplay was co-written by Moretti alongside Federica Pontremoli and Valia Santella.
The film arrives three years after Moretti’s feature Vers un avenir radieux, which served as a defense of cinema against streaming platforms. While critics categorize Succederà questa notte as a minor entry within Moretti’s broader filmography, the movie stands out for its visual composition and central performances.
