NASA Launches World’s Most Advanced Robotic Servicing Satellite

A Northrop Grumman-built spacecraft equipped with two flexible robotic arms is traveling to geosynchronous orbit following an early morning launch on Tuesday from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, according to mission details. The Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV) lifted off aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, kicking off a planned decade-long mission designed to service and inspect aging satellites in orbit.

Alongside the main spacecraft, the Falcon 9 carried three standalone propulsion pods known as Mission Extension Pods (MEPs). The launch vehicle successfully deployed all four payloads within approximately one hour of liftoff, according to mission flight timelines.

Journey to Geosynchronous Orbit

The spacecraft will not reach its final operating station immediately. It takes about one year for the MRV and its accompanying pods to maneuver from their initial elliptical drop-off orbit into a circular orbit situated more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) above Earth’s equator.

At this altitude, the vehicles will travel in lockstep with Earth’s rotation. This specific geosynchronous path places the hardware in the same operational zone used by numerous civilian and military communications satellites, missile warning platforms, and government surveillance spacecraft.
