Stephen McCullagh Trial: Natalie McNally Murder Case Unfolds in Northern Ireland

A jury has been sworn in to hear the trial of Stephen McCullagh, 36, accused of the murder of Natalie McNally, a 32-year-old woman who was 15 weeks pregnant at the time of her death. The case, which has drawn significant attention in Northern Ireland, centers around a “prolonged assault” that occurred at McNally’s home in Lurgan, County Armagh, in December 2022.

The Prosecution’s Case

The prosecution, led by Charles MacCreanor KC, alleges that Natalie McNally’s murder was “planned, calculated and premeditated,” and that Stephen McCullagh attempted to conceal his involvement. RTÉ reports that the estimated time of death is between 8:50 PM and 9:30 PM on December 18, 2022. Emergency services were alerted the following evening.

Medical Evidence and Cause of Death

State Pathologist for Northern Ireland, Dr. James Lynas, provided detailed evidence regarding the cause of death. According to RTÉ, Dr. Lynas determined that McNally died as a result of compression of the neck, stab wounds to the neck, and blunt force trauma to the head. Injuries included bruising across her head, neck, and arms, as well as internal injuries. The pathologist also indicated that the foetus, a male of approximately 15 weeks gestation, likely died as a result of the assault.

Dr. Lynas noted the absence of alcohol in McNally’s system at the time of death, but the presence of a therapeutic concentration of antidepressant medication. Bruising on her neck suggested forceful grasping, and potentially the use of a ligature. He stated that the combination of injuries – neck compression, stab wounds, and head trauma – all contributed to the fatal outcome.

Initial Police Investigation and Arrest

Police responding to the scene on December 19, 2022, found Natalie McNally lying at the top of the stairs with visible blood and a puncture wound to her neck. A small black-handled knife was discovered in the living room, according to evidence presented in court. The Journal reports that Stephen McCullagh was arrested at the scene at approximately 11:40 PM.

During the initial stages of the investigation, McCullagh reportedly told police that Natalie McNally’s ex-partner was responsible for her death. He responded with “Murder, why?” when informed of his arrest, The Journal reports.

Background and Trial Details

Natalie McNally was killed a week before Christmas in 2022. Wikipedia notes that the circumstances surrounding her death caused widespread outrage in Northern Ireland. The trial, presided over by Judge Mr Justice Patrick Kinney, is expected to last approximately five weeks, with a jury of six men and six women. The defence case, presented by barrister John Kearney KC, is scheduled to be presented later this week.
