NATO Relocates Iraq Mission Amid Middle East Tensions
Brussels – NATO has temporarily relocated personnel from its non-combat advisory mission in Iraq to Europe, citing the escalating security concerns in the Middle East. The move, confirmed on Friday, March 20, 2026, shifts operational oversight to the alliance’s regional command in Naples, Italy.
Escalating Regional Conflict Drives Relocation
The decision follows recent attacks by Iran on targets in Iraq and other Gulf nations, retaliating against the Israeli-US bombing campaign that began in late February. Iraq, bordering Iran, hosts several Western military bases, increasing the risk to NATO personnel. Several hundred personnel have been affected by the relocation according to reports.
Mission Continues from Naples
Despite the relocation, NATO affirms its commitment to the mission in Iraq, which focuses on assisting the country in building sustainable, transparent, inclusive and effective security institutions, and forces. NATO Mission Iraq (NMI) will continue to operate from Naples. “I would like to thank the Republic of Iraq and all the Allies who assisted in the safe relocation of NATO personnel from Iraq,” stated General Alexus Grynkewich, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, in a published statement.
Focus on Preventing Resurgence of ISIS
Launched in 2018, the primary aim of NATO’s mission is to prevent the resurgence of the Islamic State (ISIS) militia group. Iraqi military personnel have been trained by NATO forces as part of this effort. PBS NewsHour reported on the mission’s advisory role.
Poland Also Withdraws Troops
The relocation of NATO personnel follows a similar decision by Poland, which also withdrew its troops from Iraq in coordination with NATO allies.
Temporary Measure
NATO has characterized the relocation as a temporary measure, driven by the evolving threat landscape in the region. The alliance has not yet provided a timeline for when operations might return to Iraq. Pakistan Today reported that the shift is a temporary measure.
“I would also like to thank the dedicated men and women of NATO Mission Iraq, who continued their mission throughout this period. They are true professionals,” Grynkewich added.
