Raleigh-to-Richmond Corridor Faces New Infrastructure Challenges, According to State Officials

The Raleigh-to-Richmond corridor, a vital transportation and economic link between North Carolina and Virginia, has drawn attention due to recent infrastructure upgrades and growing traffic concerns, according to state transportation departments. The route, which includes major highways like I-95 and US 1, serves as a critical artery for commerce and commuter travel between the two states.

Transportation Infrastructure Developments

Virginia’s Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced in July 2023 plans to expand sections of I-95 near the North Carolina border to address congestion, a move cited as necessary due to the corridor’s role in handling over 200,000 vehicles daily, per the Federal Highway Administration. North Carolina’s Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has also initiated studies on improving access points along the corridor to reduce bottlenecks.
