Singapore celebrated its 61st National Day on August 9, 2026, with civilian participation at the National Stadium, featuring a prominent contingent of people with disabilities alongside traditional military displays, according to local reporting by The Straits Times and CNA.

Civilian Turnout Features Disability Sports Contingent

A 21-member contingent from the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC) took the stage during the parade segment, marking the largest and most diverse participation of people with disabilities in a National Day Parade in recent years, according to news.nestia.com. Contingent leader and former national para-athlete Yap Qian Yin led the group up a ramp in a wheelchair. The contingent also included Lim Lee Lee, who has a visual disability, alongside her Labrador Retriever guide dog Hesta, as well as other members with physical and intellectual disabilities, as reported by news.nestia.com. In total, more than 1,200 participants made up the civilian parade contingent, which marked the largest civilian participation in over a decade, according to news.nestia.com.

Military Precision Meets Community Floors

As reported by news.nestia.com, parade commander Caleb Chia of the Republic of Singapore Air Force and parade regimental sergeant major Low Kay Kee—a master warrant officer from the army—oversaw the commencement of the parade. A combined band set the marching pace for the Singapore Armed Forces Colours Party and six guard-of-honour contingents, which included the Digital and Intelligence Service and the Singapore Civil Defence Force. Following the military units, civilian groups such as the National Trades Union Congress and ride-hailing company Grab entered the arena. Spectators in the stands watched as civilian contingents opened red and white umbrellas to spell out the theme “SG Go Beyond!” alongside the combined band’s formation.

Celebrating Community Service and Judicial History

The parade programming continued with a procession of 18 floats highlighting Singaporeans who serve the country across various sectors, according to news.nestia.com. Featured participants included the Emergency Response Team LB from Lengkok Bahru—consisting of four primary school boys who patrol their neighborhood—and muralist Yip Yew Chong. Commemorating two centuries since the founding of the nation’s modern legal and judicial framework via the 1826 Second Charter of Justice, additional floats featured Sadhana Rai, the chief representation officer of legal charity Pro Bono SG. For families like Red and Jonet Ramirez, whose 22-year-old son Pio has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair, the inclusion of the disability sports contingent offered a significant moment of representation, Jonet Ramirez told reporters.
