Siemssen and his team meticulously recreated the methods Neanderthals would have used to produce birch tar. They collected bark from downy birch (Betula pubescens) and silver birch (Betula pendula) – species known to have been present in Europe during the Pleistocene epoch. They employed two primary techniques: distillation in claystone pits and condensation on stone surfaces. As Siemssen notes, the process itself was a “sensory experience,” with the challenge of removing the sticky tar from hands after hours by the fire.

Antibacterial Power Demonstrated

The resulting birch tar samples were then tested against cultures of Staphylococcus aureus, a bacterium commonly responsible for wound infections. The results were significant: the birch tar effectively inhibited the growth of the bacteria, demonstrating its antibacterial properties. This finding supports the traditional use of birch tar in some Indigenous communities, such as the Mi’kmaq of eastern Canada, who call it maskwio’mi and use it as a broad-spectrum antibiotic.

Beyond Antibiotics: Insect Repellent Potential

The study also suggests that birch tar may have served as an insect repellent. While further research is needed, this adds another layer to the understanding of how Neanderthals mitigated health risks during the harsh conditions of the last Ice Ages.
