Stink Nuisance Disrupts Industrial Area in Nederweert

A significant odor nuisance impacted the Pannenweg industrial estate in Nederweert and surrounding areas on Wednesday morning, March 4, 2026. Reports of the unpleasant smell also extended to the vicinity of Weert.

Reports of Gas-Like Odor

Residents and business owners reported a strong odor resembling gas. The first reports originated from Pannenweg I industrial estate in Nederweert, prompting an investigation by the local fire brigade. Additional reports came from Randweg West and Randweg Noord.

Source Identified as Manure Spreading

The investigation quickly determined that the source of the strong smell was a farmer spreading manure on nearby land. The fire brigade continues to monitor the situation.

Safety Precautions and Monitoring

The Hazardous Substances Advisor (AGS) was called in to assist in identifying the source and is currently conducting measurements. As of midday, measurements have not detected concentrations of substances posing a health risk. Nederweert24 reports continuous monitoring is ongoing.

IKC Laar Temporary Evacuation

IKC Laar school was temporarily evacuated as a precautionary measure. Students and staff were unsure if the odor originated from a potential gas leak within the building or from the external source. Students gathered at a designated assembly point across from the school even as the fire brigade conducted measurements inside and around the building. Network operator Enexis shut off the main gas pipeline as a safety precaution. No hazardous substances were detected within the school.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities will provide updates as the cause is definitively determined.
