Neil Young Cancels European Tour, Cites Demand for a Break

Neil Young has addressed fans for the first time since announcing the cancellation of his 2026 European tour, explaining he simply “needed a break.” The decision impacts his performance at the inaugural State Fayre festival in Chelmsford, Essex, scheduled for June 26-28, 2026.

Cancellation Announcement and Initial Response

Earlier this month, Young announced he would be cancelling all his upcoming outdoor dates, stating, “this is not the time” to be performing. The cancellation affects shows previously planned at Cornwall’s Eden Sessions, Manchester’s Heaton Park, Glasgow’s Summer Sessions at Bellahouston Park, Blenheim Palace Festival, and Cardiff’s Blackweir Fields, in addition to the State Fayre appearance.

In a statement released on February 6th via Neil Young Archives, he apologized to fans, saying, “I’m sorry to let you down, but this is not the time. I do love playing LIVE and being with you and the Chrome Hearts. LOVE Neil be well.”

Fan Correspondence Reveals Reason for Break

Responding to a series of fan letters on his website, Young clarified his decision, stating, “All is good Michael. Just needed a break. Listening to my body.” He reiterated the need for a break when asked for a better understanding of his decision, but did not elaborate on specific reasons.

Young too acknowledged a fan’s suggestion to tour the US to unite people amidst the current political climate, stating he “will try” to do so.

State Fayre and Previous Performances

The planned 2026 dates followed successful performances last year, including a headline set at Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage and a performance at BST Hyde Park State Fayre was set to feature Kings of Leon and The Lumineers as fellow headliners. The festival, aiming to be the UK’s largest music and barbecue event with a capacity of around 30,000, is scheduled to take place at Hylands Park in Chelmsford, Essex.

Recent Activism and Charitable Efforts

Beyond his music, Young has been actively involved in social and political causes. He recently gifted his entire music catalogue to the people of Greenland for free, protesting Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s support of Donald Trump and the potential annexation of the Arctic island. He had previously removed his discography from Amazon Music in protest.
