Understanding Extramedullary Myeloma
Multiple myeloma is a cancer that originates in plasma cells, a type of white blood cell responsible for antibody production. Typically, myeloma cells accumulate within the bone marrow. However, in extramedullary myeloma, these cancerous cells disseminate to other parts of the body, including soft tissues, various organs, and even the central nervous system. This spread complicates treatment and often leads to a less favorable prognosis.
