Nelly Korda Takes Commanding Lead at Chevron Championship with Back-to-Back 65s

Nelly Korda continued her dominant performance at The Chevron Championship, shooting a second consecutive 65 to extend her lead at the top of the leaderboard. The world No. 1 golfer carded 14-under par through 36 holes, establishing a six-shot advantage over her nearest competitors.

Korda’s consistent ball-striking and precision on the par-5 holes were key factors in her second-round surge. She birdied four of the five par-5s during the opening round and added three more on Friday, capitalizing on her length off the tee while maintaining the precision required for major championship golf.

After an eagle attempt on the par-5 14th hole came up just short, Korda still managed to convert the birdie putt, pushing her to 12-under and increasing her margin to six shots over Ryann O’Toole, who shot 68 in the afternoon wave. O’Toole, along with University of Texas junior Farah O’Keefe and Korea’s Ina Yoon, shared third place at 7-under par.

Korda also excelled on the shorter holes, stuffing approach shots on the par-3 ninth and 11th holes to make birdie on both. Her ability to perform well across all hole types underscored her adaptability to the challenging setup at Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston, Texas.

The six-shot lead Korda holds after 36 holes represents the largest margin in women’s major championship history since Mickey Wright’s eight-shot advantage in the 1961 LPGA Championship. Korda, the defending champion at The Chevron Championship, is now poised to make a serious run at back-to-back titles.

With her game firing on all cylinders, Korda emphasized the importance of executing quality shots under pressure. “You have to hit really good shots in to give yourself a gaze at birdie or eagle,” she said following her second round. “That’s what I love about major championships.”

As the tournament moves into the weekend, all eyes will be on Korda as she seeks to convert her substantial lead into another major victory.
