Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck’s AI Filmmaking Company, InterPositive

Netflix has acquired InterPositive, an artificial intelligence (AI) powered filmmaking technology company founded by Ben Affleck, for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition signals a growing trend of integrating AI into the film and television production process, with a focus on empowering creators rather than replacing them.

InterPositive’s Technology and Approach

InterPositive develops AI-powered tools designed to assist filmmakers in post-production. Unlike AI systems focused on generating content from scratch – such as Google’s Veo3 or OpenAI’s Sora – InterPositive’s technology works with existing footage. According to Affleck, the tools are trained on a film or TV production’s own footage, helping with tasks like reframing shots, adjusting lighting, and removing wires from stunt performances.1

Affleck’s Shift in Perspective on AI

Ben Affleck, who founded InterPositive in 2022, initially expressed skepticism about the creative potential of AI. He previously stated he didn’t believe the technology could “write anything meaningful” or create films “from whole cloth.”1 However, he has since embraced the technology, stating he was moved from being scared of AI to viewing it as a “really meaningful innovation.”1

Netflix’s Strategy and Commitment to Creators

The acquisition aligns with Netflix’s broader strategy of integrating technology to support storytelling. Elizabeth Stone, Netflix’s chief product and technology officer, emphasized that the partnership is based on a “shared belief that innovation should empower storytellers, not replace them.”3 Affleck will join Netflix as a senior advisor, alongside the entire InterPositive team.2

Industry Response and the Responsible AI Movement

The deal comes as the entertainment industry grapples with the implications of AI. Affleck is among the signatories of the Creators Coalition on AI, a group advocating for “responsible, human-centered innovation.”1 The coalition acknowledges the potential of AI but stresses the importance of preserving human creativity and judgment in the filmmaking process.1

Recent Netflix Developments

This acquisition follows a recent shift in Netflix’s strategic partnerships. Earlier this week, Affleck and Matt Damon’s production company, Artists Equity, entered a multi-year partnership with Netflix, granting the streamer first access to their future streaming projects.2
