Dutch Man Sentenced for Organizing Illegal Border Checks

A man from Nieuw-Weerdinge, Netherlands, has been sentenced to six weeks in prison, with four weeks suspended, for inciting citizens to conduct unauthorized border checks targeting asylum seekers. Jan Huzen, 54, organized the “civilian border controls” near the German border in June 2025, leading to his arrest and subsequent conviction.

The Illegal Border Checks

Last June, Huzen led groups of individuals, many wearing yellow vests, to inspect cars crossing the border at Ter Apel and Sellingen in the Groningen province. The groups targeted vehicles suspected of carrying asylum seekers, following them and attempting to identify passengers. DutchNews.nl reported that the Marechaussee, the Dutch military police, are the only authority permitted to monitor border crossings.

Motivation and Justification

Huzen claimed he was motivated by reports that German authorities were “dumping” asylum seekers across the border into the Netherlands. NOS News detailed Huzen’s argument that the checks were largely symbolic, a demonstration against what he perceived as a lenient Dutch asylum policy. His lawyer compared the actions to those of Extinction Rebellion, arguing that the border served as a symbol for Huzen’s broader political objections.

Legal Consequences

This is not Huzen’s first conviction for inciting similar actions. Having been previously convicted of incitement on two occasions, the judge in Assen determined a prison sentence was unavoidable. NOS News reported that he had previously received suspended sentences and community service for similar offenses.

Arrest and Charges

Huzen was initially arrested in June 2025 for attempting to take the law into his own hands. NL Times reported he was suspected of ambtsdwang, a Dutch legal term for attempting to coerce or obstruct public officials. Prosecutors alleged he organized the inspections to pressure the government into increasing official border patrols, which constitutes a criminal offense.

Government Response

Justice Minister David van Weel acknowledged the frustration of those involved in the vigilante actions but urged them to cease their activities. DutchNews.nl reported that authorities emphasized the importance of allowing law enforcement to handle border control.
