Neurolens Technology Shows Promise for Headache and Eye Strain Relief

A recent real-world analysis suggests that Neurolens, featuring contoured prism technology, may offer significant improvements for patients experiencing headaches, tired eyes, and neck and shoulder stiffness compared to conventional prism lenses. The findings, based on an analysis of nearly 100,000 patient records, indicate a potential benefit for those seeking relief from visually-triggered discomfort.

Study Details and Findings

The study, conducted by Sumeer Singh, BSc Optometry, MPhil, PhD, director of clinical affairs at Newton, analyzed 96,745 patient records from practices offering Neurolens. The groups included 4,807 patients prescribed Neurolens, 1,293 prescribed conventional prism lenses, and 90,645 controls who were not prescribed prism lenses. All patients had not been wearing prism lenses prior to the study.

Patients completed the Neurolens Lifestyle Index questionnaire at baseline and a follow-up visit to assess symptom scores, including the severity of headaches, neck and shoulder pain/stiffness, and tired eyes. Changes in symptoms were then compared between the treatment groups.

Results showed that patients wearing Neurolens reported a 28% greater improvement in overall questionnaire scores at the second visit compared to those using conventional prism lenses. Specifically, Neurolens users experienced:

  • 53% greater improvement in neck and shoulder stiffness
  • 41% greater improvement in headache symptoms
  • 27% greater improvement in tired eyes

How Neurolens Differs from Conventional Prism Lenses

Davis Corley, CEO of Newton, explained the key difference between the two technologies. “Unlike conventional prism, which provides uniform correction across the entire lens surface, contoured prism technology varies the amount of prism correction from distance to near viewing, aligning with the eyes’ natural needs throughout the day,” Corley stated. Newton asserts this dynamic prism application is unique and effective in relieving symptoms associated with eye misalignment, such as headaches, neck pain, and motion sickness.

Implications for Patient Care

According to Dr. Singh, the study findings suggest that Neurolens with contoured prism technology may provide “enhanced therapeutic benefit beyond conventional prism correction.” He recommends that optometrists consider Neurolens as a first-line treatment option for patients presenting with persistent headaches, neck and shoulder tension that worsens throughout the day, or visual fatigue and tired eyes.
