Sangju City Launches Dedicated Sports Association for Athletes with Disabilities

Sangju, South Korea – January 7, 2026 – A notable milestone was reached in Sangju City on November 27th with the official launch of the Sangju City sports Association for the Disabled. The ceremony,held at the Sangju City Indoor Gymnasium,marked a commitment to expanding opportunities and support for athletes with disabilities in the region.

A Historic Beginning

Over 300 attendees, including city council members, provincial and city councilors, association heads, Sports Association for the Disabled executives, and participating athletes, witnessed the inaugural event. The launch commenced with vibrant performances, including a dynamic drum presentation and an incanto soloist ensemble. The program included a formal launch declaration,a progress report outlining future initiatives,and the presentation of commemorative plaques.

Recognizing Key Contributors

The city recognized individuals instrumental in the progress of disabled sports in Sangju. Plaques of merit were awarded to Sangju Mayor Kim jang-hwan, celebrated weightlifter Kim Hye-min, and dedicated disabled sports leader Kim Chil-seon, acknowledging their contributions to fostering inclusivity and athletic achievement.

Experiential Opportunities for All

Attendees were also given the possibility to experience adaptive sports firsthand. an experience center featuring Shurun and Hangung – sports specifically designed for individuals with disabilities – provided a hands-on introduction to these activities, receiving a positive response from participants.

During the ceremony, Sangju Mayor Kang Young-seok expressed gratitude to the organizations and individuals who contributed to the association’s formation.
