Neon Genesis Evangelion Revival: Yoko Taro to Pen Latest Anime Series

A new installment of the iconic anime Neon Genesis Evangelion is in development, with Nier: Automata’s Yoko Taro taking on the role of series composer and screenwriter. The announcement came at the end of the Evangelion:30+ 30th Anniversary of Evangelion event in Yokohama, Japan, a three-day festival celebrating the franchise’s three decades of impact IGN.

A New Vision for a Classic

The project is a collaboration between Studio Khara, the production company founded by original Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno, and CloverWorks. While plot details remain undisclosed, Studio Khara emphasized that this will be a completely new series, distinct from previous iterations IGN.

Creative Team

Yoko Taro expressed his enthusiasm for the project, tweeting, “It’s been announced! I’ll do my best!” IGN. He will be joined by directors Kazuya Tsurumaki, known for his work on the Rebuild of Evangelion films, and Toko Yatabe, a key animator on the Rebuild series IGN. Keiichi Okabe, the composer behind the soundtracks for Nier, Drakengard, and Tekken, will be responsible for the music IGN.

A Legacy Continues

The original Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series aired from 1995 to 1996, achieving widespread popularity in Japan and internationally. The 1997 film, The End of Evangelion, offered an alternative conclusion to the series. From 2007 to 2021, the Rebuild of Evangelion series of four films presented a retelling of the original story IGN.

Anniversary Celebration

The announcement of the new series was a highlight of the Evangelion:30+ 30th Anniversary of Evangelion event, which featured exhibitions, talk demonstrate sessions, an Evangelion kabuki adaptation, and a new 15-minute short film starring Asuka Langley IGN. The short sparked discussion among fans, presenting a vision of Asuka married to Shinji and with a child IGN.
