Apple Reengineers MacBook Pro With OLED Displays and Lighter Design

Apple plans to release new MacBook Pro models featuring OLED displays and a significantly lighter interior redesign in October or November, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in his Power On newsletter. The updated laptops feature reengineered internal components and miniaturized parts designed to make the hardware much easier to carry than current versions.

OLED MacBook Pro adds touch screens and M5 chips

The upcoming OLED MacBook Pro models are rumored to include six distinct hardware additions over existing computers. Alongside the transition to OLED display panels, the laptops introduce touch-screen capabilities and a Dynamic Island replacing the traditional display notch. Performance is driven by new M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.

The physical chassis is thinner and lighter. Currently, existing MacBook Pro models weigh up to 4.7 pounds. For comparison, the MacBook Air weighs up to 3.3 pounds, and the MacBook Neo weighs 2.7 pounds. The OLED variants are positioned as higher-end, higher-priced devices that will sit above the current MacBook Pro lineup.

Apple tests laptops for October or November release

Apple is actively testing the upcoming laptops with macOS 27.2, which is currently in its beta testing phase, according to Gurman. The release window is slated for October or November. This rollout coincides with a broader hardware schedule that includes smart home products. Gurman reported that Apple plans to introduce a smart home hub featuring an iMac G4-style design, alongside a new HomePod mini and a new Apple TV, on October 13.
