University of Palermo Launches Advanced Training in Oral Pathology and Oncology

The University of Palermo’s BiND Department will inaugurate a modern Master’s Degree program in Pathology, Medicine and Oral Surgery on April 10th. This advanced training course focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, and therapy of oral diseases, with a particular emphasis on oral cancer.

A Quarter-Century of Progress in Oral Cancer Awareness

The launch symbolically commemorates the 25th anniversary of the SIPMO Congress “Oral Cancer” (Palermo, 2001). This congress was a pivotal moment in the scientific and clinical understanding of oral cancer, establishing foundational theories still relevant today. These include the importance of known risk factors like tobacco and alcohol, as well as emerging factors like HPV, and the concept of potentially malignant lesions. The congress also highlighted the integrated role of clinical examination, histopathology, imaging, and surgery in patient management.

Master’s Program Details

The Master’s program is coordinated by Prof. Giuseppina Campisi, with Prof. Rodolfo Mauceri serving as Vice-Coordinator. The inaugural day will feature a keynote address by Prof. Lorenzo Lo Muzi, Past President of SIPMO, tracing the evolution of knowledge regarding the etiopathogenesis, biomarkers, early diagnosis, and integrated therapies for oral cancer. Speeches will also be given by Prof. Giuseppina Campisi and Prof. Umberto Romeo, President of SIPMO, and Prof. Giacomo Oteri, the Italian representative of the Special Schools in Oral Surgery, demonstrating the continuity between the 2001 congress and current research priorities.

National Reference Center

The initiative is endorsed by leading scientific societies and the Order of Surgeons and Dentists of Palermo, solidifying the city’s position as a national hub for oral medicine, surgery, and the early detection of oral cancer and severe oral diseases.
