New sports hall in Mertert: 48 Million Euro School Campus Project

In the municipality of Mertert, one of the largest sports halls in the region should see the light of day within a few years. Recently, the municipal councils gave the green light to this ambitious project on the Wasserbillig school campus. Despite the high budget – the municipality is counting on around 48 million euros – those responsible have shown themselves determined to implement the project. the councilors unanimously approved the detailed preliminary project (APD). The project is expected to be among the most expensive investments in the history of the municipality.

But for Mayor Jérôme Laurent (LSAP), another aspect must be highlighted. “It was crucial for us to show with this project how we can continue to develop and modernize our municipal infrastructure,” he explains. According to him, the new gymnasium is a central step for the future of children, associations and the entire community.

An impetus for the redevelopment of the school campus

With this construction, the municipality wishes to set a milestone.The gymnasium constitutes the starting point for a complete and subsequent redevelopment of the school campus. After the planned completion of the new building, work on the existing gymnasium, the cultural center next to it and the Parrot Island relay house are expected to follow. “But it’s still music for the future,” says Jérôme laurent.

Wasserbillig to Get New Gymnasium and Cultural Center Modernization

the municipality of Wasserbillig is embarking on an ambitious redevelopment project that includes a new gymnasium and modernization plans for it’s cultural center. The decision to move forward was made in December 2024, with BFF architects chosen for the project due to their design best meeting the municipality’s expectations.

The project is slated to receive notable financial support, including 7.1 million euros from the Ministry of Sports, with additional subsidies anticipated. The existing gymnasium will be integrated into the continued redevelopment of the school site.

A Climbing Area that Attracts Attention

The new gymnasium is envisioned as more than just a functional space.Plans include creating a multifunctional sports hall with a particular focus on a climbing area designed to attract attention and become a regional draw.

Beyond the gymnasium, the municipality intends to modernize the Wasserbillig cultural center after 2030, potentially replacing it with a new building altogether. The relay house on Île aux parrots is also slated for removal as part of the broader redevelopment plan.
