A crowded field of candidates is emerging in the race for New york’s 12th Congressional District, setting the stage for a competitive democratic primary. The seat, currently held by Representative Jerry Nadler, is attracting a diverse group of challengers, including political commentators, activists, and former financial professionals.

George Conway, a prominent lawyer and outspoken critic of Donald Trump, has officially launched his campaign, according to the New York Times. The New York Times also noted that liberal commentator Molly Jong-Fast and former Trump fixer Michael Cohen are also considering runs. Don Lemon, the former CNN host, has also expressed interest in joining the race.

A Diverse Range of challengers

Beyond these well-known figures, a trio of advocates have entered the fray: David Hogg, Maxwell Alejandro Frost, and Mathew Shurka.

Advocates Stepping into the Arena

Mathew Shurka, 37, is a vocal opponent of conversion therapy, having survived the practice as a teenager. He is campaigning to ban the practice nationwide. David Hogg, 25, co-founded March for Our Lives after the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. He is running on a platform that includes Medicare for All and ending U.S. military aid to Israel, stating, “The fight of my life is the fight against American manufactured violence everywhere. I do not understand how people can be horrified by the shootings in our high schools, but think that these children and adults being slaughtered in Gaza is any different. It’s the same thing.”

Maxwell Alejandro Frost,a survivor of sexual assault,is a lawyer specializing in Title IX cases. She argues that Trump-era policies hindered victims’ ability to pursue claims and expressed skepticism about the Biden governance’s efforts to restore Title IX protections, stating, “Now there’s legal battles around it, but I’m skeptical that we will revive them. I am very upset by the Democratic Party playing with sexual assault as a political football.”

Former Financial Professional Enters the Race

Rounding out the field is Alan Pardee, 58, a former managing director at Merrill Lynch.

Looking ahead

With the April 2 filing deadline still three months away, the race for New york’s 12th Congressional District remains fluid.
