New York Energy Rebate Checks 2026: Amounts, Eligibility, and Schedule

New York is distributing $1,000 million in energy relief checks to millions of households to offset rising utility costs. Kathy Hochul announced that approximately 3 million residents had already received their payments by October 15, leaving another 5.2 million checks scheduled for delivery, eldiariony.com reported.

The payouts fall under the Protecting Our Wallets Energy Rebate program, known as POWER, which aims to soften the financial impact of expensive home heating in winter and air conditioning in summer, telemundo47.com reported. The state began mailing the one-time checks on September 21, and distribution will continue through December.

How the POWER Energy Rebates Work

The state issues payments ranging from $100 to $200 depending on household income and tax filing status for the 2024 tax year, eldiariony.com reported. Married couples filing jointly and surviving spouses with incomes of $150,000 or less receive $200. Those making between $150,000 and $300,000 receive $150. Single filers, heads of household, and married individuals filing separately with incomes up to $150,000 receive $100.

The state determines these amounts using the New York adjusted gross income listed on line 33 of the 2024 IT-201 form.

Eligibility Requirements for New York Residents

To qualify for a POWER check, residents must have lived in New York for all of 2024, filed their resident state tax return on time, and not have been claimed as a dependent on anyone else’s tax return, eldiariony.com reported. Timely filing means submitting the return by April 15, 2025, or by October 15, 2025, for those with a valid extension. Residents do not need to submit copies of electricity or gas bills to prove they qualify, nor is there any need to apply or register.

Estos cheques son una ayuda crucial en momentos económicos difíciles, explained Amanda Hiller, commissioner of the department. The department uses tax return data to determine eligibility.

Delivery Details and Monthly Assistance Programs

The check arrives at the most recent address on file with the Taxation Department. Residents who moved and whose information is not updated can modify it through their online services account. Deliveries do not follow a zip code or regional order, meaning a neighbor might receive a payment earlier, and the department does not offer individual delivery dates or information on the status of each check through telephone representatives.

In addition to the one-time checks, New York offers the Energy Affordability Program, which provides monthly discounts on utility bills for eligible households. Approximately 50,000 families applied for this ongoing assistance following an enrollment campaign launched in mid-September, according to state figures. The program serves approximately 1 million households, while another 2.5 million could qualify and are not yet enrolled. Residents can review payment details on the official POWER website and check monthly discounts at ny.gov/EAP.
