New York Liberty Aim for Championship Repeat with Chris DeMarco at the Helm
The New York Liberty are entering the 2026 season with championship aspirations under new head coach Chris DeMarco, building on the momentum of their 2024 WNBA Championship victory – the first in franchise history and New York City’s first professional basketball championship since 1973. General Manager Jonathan Kolb emphasizes the need for patience as the team integrates new players and offensive strategies, despite boasting a roster considered among the league’s best.
DeMarco’s Vision: Championship or Bust
Chris DeMarco, introduced as the Liberty’s head coach in December 2025, has made it clear that the team’s primary goal is to contend for another championship. “In 2026, we obviously have championship aspirations,” DeMarco stated during a press conference. “The roster is built as such and I touched on it earlier — championship competitors, that’s always going to be the goal.” He likewise highlighted the importance of player development and building a strong team culture alongside the pursuit of a title.
Kolb’s Approach: Patience and Connection
While acknowledging the team’s championship ambitions, General Manager Jonathan Kolb is advocating for a measured approach. Kolb, in his seventh season leading the Liberty’s basketball operations, stressed the importance of patience as the team adjusts to a new coaching staff and implements new systems. “It’s going to seize time and I think it’s just about being patient with the process,” Kolb said. He also emphasized the need for team connection, stating, “Talent can win games but what we want is connection.”
A Star-Studded Roster
The Liberty return five key players from their 2024 championship team, including Sabrina Ionescu, Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, and Leonie Fiebich. The team further bolstered its roster in the offseason by adding All-Star Satou Sabally. This combination of returning talent and new additions creates a roster with depth, size, and versatility.
Kolb’s Track Record
Jonathan Kolb was named the WNBA Basketball Executive of the Year in 2023 after assembling a team that won the Commissioner’s Cup, finished the regular season with a 32-8 record, and reached the WNBA Finals. He made history as the first WNBA GM to acquire three All-Stars – including two MVPs – in a single offseason, bringing in Jonquel Jones, Breanna Stewart, and Courtney Vandersloot prior to the 2023 season. Kolb also drafted Sabrina Ionescu as the first overall pick in team history.
Looking Ahead
The New York Liberty face the challenge of integrating a new head coach and offensive principles while managing expectations surrounding their highly-regarded roster. Kolb’s emphasis on patience and DeMarco’s championship-focused vision will be key as the Liberty navigate the 2026 season and strive for another WNBA title.
