Josef Newgarden Wins Good Ranchers 250, Takes IndyCar Championship Lead

AVONDALE, Ariz. – Josef Newgarden of Team Penske secured his first victory of the 2026 NTT IndyCar Series season at Phoenix Raceway on Saturday, winning the Good Ranchers 250 and taking the championship lead. Despite leading only eight laps, Newgarden’s strategic pit stop for fresh tires in the closing stages proved decisive, allowing him to overtake Kyle Kirkwood and claim his 33rd career IndyCar victory.

Race Recap

The race, IndyCar’s first at Phoenix since 2018 (a race Newgarden also won), featured a record 565 on-track passes. Newgarden started second and capitalized on a late-race caution period to make a crucial pit stop, emerging with fresher tires than many of his competitors.

Kirkwood finished second, 1.7937 seconds behind Newgarden, while David Malukas, also of Team Penske, completed the podium in third. Pato O’Ward (Arrow McLaren) finished fourth, and Marcus Armstrong (Meyer Shank Racing w/ Curb Agajanian) rounded out the top five.

  • Rasmussen’s Challenge: Christian Rasmussen, starting 18th, mounted a strong comeback, leading for a significant portion of the race before contact with Will Power.
  • Late-Race Strategy: A caution period with approximately 30 laps remaining allowed Newgarden and O’Ward to pit for fresh tires, setting up Newgarden’s winning move.
  • Final Laps: Newgarden passed Kirkwood with seven laps to go and held on for the victory. Rasmussen hit the wall with a few laps to go, losing the lead.
