NextGen Operator: Nuclear Operations Development Program – FPL

Florida Power & Light Company launched a specialized multi-year development role designed to pipeline engineering students directly into commercial nuclear operations careers, according to company announcements. The NextGen Operator – Nuclear Operations Development Program at the Turkey Point Nuclear Plant provides year-round, part-time professional training integrated directly with participants’ university schedules.

Program Structure and Academic Integration

Unlike traditional summer internships, Florida Power & Light Company structured the NextGen Operator role as a year-round position that operates alongside normal academic semesters. According to program guidelines, participants balance degree completion with consistent training milestones. Structured learning activities include self-study modules, remote learning coursework, knowledge checks, and regular onsite familiarization at the Turkey Point facility.

Participants engage in operational observations, job shadowing with experienced Operations personnel, and formal reviews with assigned supervisors and mentors. The curriculum covers reactor safety principles, plant configuration control, procedural compliance, and command-and-control leadership within commercial nuclear environments.

Eligibility and Professional Expectations

The program targets high-performing engineering students with an interest in power generation, plant systems, engineering applications, and nuclear operations. According to company specifications, applicants must hold a high school diploma or GED and possess zero to years of prior professional nuclear experience.

Participants must demonstrate strong safety mindsets, proactive communication, and adherence to site standards during all onsite activities. The program requires prompt responses to supervisory communications, strict schedule management regarding academic exams and travel, and delivery of technical presentations during program milestone reviews.
