Mike Sullivan’s Career Highlights

Mike Sullivan, currently the head coach of the New York Rangers, has had a distinguished career in professional ice hockey. Born on February 27, 1968, in Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan was drafted by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 1987 NHL entry draft. He played for several teams including the San Jose Sharks, Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins, and Phoenix Coyotes before transitioning to coaching in 2002.

Sullivan served as the head coach of the Boston Bruins from 2003 to 2005. He also held assistant coaching positions with the Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers, and Vancouver Canucks, and spent a year in player development with the Chicago Blackhawks. He achieved significant success as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins, leading the team to Stanley Cup championships in both 2016 and 2017, becoming the only American-born coach to win the Stanley Cup more than once. He was later relieved of his duties with the Penguins after the 2024–25 season before being hired by the Rangers.
