Niamh O’Brien Passes Away at Age 52 in Dublin
Niamh O’Brien, the renowned Irish dancer, former lead performer in Lord of the Dance, and wife of Michael Flatley, died at the age of 52. She passed away peacefully at the Beacon Hospital in south Dublin following a period of illness, a representative announced.
Flatley confirmed the loss in a public statement, sharing that his wife of 20 years had passed away. “My heart is broken. I have lost my beautiful wife, Niamh, and my best friend,” Flatley said in the statement. He added, My gorgeous bride of 20 years has gone to the Lord in Heaven.
Early Dancing Career and Rise to Prominence
Originally from County Meath, O’Brien began Irish dancing at the young age of three. Throughout her teenage years, she competed at an elite level, securing a fourth-place finish in the world championships at the age of 17.
Transitioning from competitive dance to professional stage performances, she joined several major international productions. She performed the lead role of Saoirse in Flatley’s Lord of the Dance, and also appeared in Riverdance, Feet of Flames, and Celtic Tiger.
Marriage to Michael Flatley and Family Life
The location was situated just three kilometers from Castlehyde, the 18th-century Palladian-style estate purchased in 1999 and later restored by Flatley, which served as the ancestral home of the first president of Ireland, Douglas Hyde.

The couple welcomed their son, Michael St James, in 2007. In subsequent years, O’Brien provided crucial support to her husband during his personal health battles, including his treatment for cancer following a 2023 diagnosis. Flatley recounted an instance around Christmas in 2022 when he received his cancer diagnosis over the phone from his doctor, describing how he turned to find Niamh, who hugged him and made everything seem a little better. He also recalled waking up during treatment in severe pain, describing how his wife was there and smiling, and remarked, Can you imagine the courage of my wife, to put on a smile in that position?
He added, The courage that took? Women are so much stronger than men. They just are.
Families Thank Beacon Hospital Staff
Flatley and the O’Brien family expressed deep gratitude toward the medical professionals who managed her treatment. The family’s representative noted sincere appreciation for the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Beacon Hospital who cared for O’Brien over her final weeks, while asking for privacy during the bereavement period. The representative stated that both families were devastated by her sudden passing.
Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course by the family.
