Actor Nicholas Hoult will join the cast of HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series as Professor Gilderoy Lockhart for the show’s second season, according to reports first published by Deadline. The production marks a high-profile addition to the wizarding franchise adaptation, which has already granted an early season two renewal ahead of its premiere.
Nicholas Hoult Steps Into Gilderoy Lockhart Role
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nicholas Hoult will portray Professor Gilderoy Lockhart, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher who arrives at Hogwarts during Harry’s second year. The character anchors Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the second book in J.K. Rowling’s fantasy series that serves as the blueprint for the show’s sophomore run. Within the narrative, Lockhart enjoys widespread renown for supposed magical triumphs, though later plot developments expose him as a fraud who stole credit and erased memories from genuine heroes. Kenneth Branagh previously played Lockhart in the 2002 feature film adaptation.
Production on the second season of the series is slated to begin this fall, as reported by CBR. HBO previously handed the series an early season two renewal in May. Behind the camera, Jon Brown serves as co-showrunner alongside series showrunner Francesca Gardiner.

While season two ramps up for autumn filming, the franchise’s first season—officially titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone—carries a scheduled release date of December 25. The ensemble cast features Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, alongside Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The adult faculty includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
The broader creative team driving the project includes Mark Mylod, who directs multiple episodes and executive produces alongside Gardiner. Hoult Audition History With the Franchise
Though this marks Hoult’s official entry into the Wizarding World, the actor previously tried out for multiple roles in the original film franchise. During an appearance on First We Feast’s YouTube series Hot Ones Versus while promoting his film Nosferatu, Hoult recounted reading for several parts under Chris Columbus, including the titular role of Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy. “I think I got to the point where I auditioned with [Columbus],” Hoult stated on the program, noting he eventually aged out of consideration after trying out for nearly every role in Harry Potter.
