Nick Jensen’s Future with the Ottawa Senators Uncertain

Ottawa Senators defenseman Nick Jensen is unlikely to be re-signed by the team this offseason, as he is set to become an unrestricted free agent. The 35-year-old’s role diminished during the 2025-26 season, and the emergence of younger players suggests a limited future with the club.

Trade History and Contract Details

Jensen joined the Senators in July 2024 in a trade with the Washington Capitals, where Ottawa sent Jakob Chychrun in exchange for Jensen and a 2026 third-round draft pick. He was in the final year of a three-year, $12.15 million contract extension ($4.05 million AAV) originally signed with the Capitals during the 2022-23 campaign.

Performance and Injury Impact

In 61 games during the 2025-26 season, Jensen recorded 17 points (4 goals, 13 assists). His average ice time decreased to 17:00 per game, down from over 20 minutes per game in the previous season. Jensen underwent surgery in March to repair a torn meniscus, ending his season early.

Senators’ Defensive Outlook

The Senators are expected to offer highly-touted prospect Carter Yakemchuk a full-time role on their defense next season. With Yakemchuk, Artem Zub, and Jordan Spence already established on the right side, opportunities for Jensen appear limited.

On-Ice Statistics

While on the ice at five-on-five, the Senators saw 49.2 percent of shot attempts, 51.3 percent of expected goals, 51.5 percent of scoring chances, and 50.1 percent of high-danger chances with Jensen playing.

Potential Future Options

Whereas the Washington Capitals are seeking assist on the right side of their defense, it is believed Jensen may be older than the type of player they are targeting. He could pursue opportunities with other teams where he can reclaim a more prominent role.

Staios’ Statement on UFAs

Senators GM Steve Staios stated the club has “not closed the door” on any of their pending unrestricted free agents, but the likelihood of Jensen returning appears low.
